Benefits of Membership

  • The Annual Meeting held each May provides opportunities for VAS members and their students to meet together and give presentations on their current original research in the various Section Oral Presentations Sessions as well as the Poster Session.  Presentations given by Invited Speakers are often included in the various Section Oral Presentation Sessions.  Special symposia are often part of the Annual Meeting agenda.  The yearly Sydney S. Negus Memorial Lecture occurs in conjunction with the VAS Academy Conference.  A number of special events occur at the banquet:  announcement of the J. Shelton Horsley Award recipient, presentation of the newly elected VAS Fellows, and installation of the elected officers for the upcoming year.
  • The Fall Undergraduate Research Meeting held each fall (late October or early November) provides opportunities for undergraduate students mentored by faculty members (who are VAS members “in good standing”) to compete for funds for their proposed research.
  • VAS members “in good standing” can apply for various research grants for support for STEM research.
  • Awards & Honors recognize outstanding student presentations at the Annual Meeting and service to VAS and STEM respectively.
  • Publications:  VAS publishes the Virginia Journal of Science, containing original peer reviewed research articles, and the Virginia Scientist, our newsletter, detailing VAS events and also STEM news in the Commonwealth.
